Pro Ribbon Technology - Alcons AudioThe RBN1801 is an 18″ professional ribbon transducer with a peak power handling of 3000W. and is currently the most powerful ribbon driver on the market. It features two patents. Alcons’ RBN transducers are the only pro-ribbon drivers with “Real-90” horizontal dispersion up to 20kHz.

Alcons’ ribbon drivers were developed by Philip de Haan, sr. R&D engineer and 20+ year veteran in ribbon transducer technology. He is initiator of a number of significant patents and can be seen as “father” of today’s high-output pro-ribbon technology.

De Haan: “Since 1983 we’ve been expanding the learning curve and did a lot of research on new materials, techniques and production processes. We’ve tested every medium-to-large sized ribbon driver on the market, to see and measure for ourselves what the current status of ribbon development is. Now this know-how has led to a new generation of ribbon drivers with the RBN601 being the first result of that.”

Over the last years, the ribbon has gained popularity in the pro-audio market, because of the
fast transient response and the accurate sound reproduction, required by today’s new high-resolution media, like SA CD a.o.. The low weight moving mass of the diaphragm results in a transient response which delivers exceptional clarity, intelligibility and throw. Ribbon drivers feature extreme low distortion, only 1/10th of the THD of existing (compression or dome) drivers. Because of the different working principle, a ribbon driver does not have a “compression threshold”, maintaining the same tonal balance at all sound pressure levels. The flat-response caters for increased “gain-before-feedback” even in the most critical circumstances.

Pro Ribbon Technology - Alcons AudioThe RBN-series pro-ribbon drivers are the only ribbon transducers delivering real 90° horizontal coverage (patented). The wide dispersion, combined with the natural cylindrical wave pattern, makes them ideal for line-array applications.

The RBN1801 is the latest development in Alcons pro-ribbon technology. With the on-going research on array-technology, the need existed for a larger, single-diaphragm driver: Of course, a larger radiating surface can be made with multiple smaller drivers, but this will drastically sacrifice the degree of frontal-radiation, which is one of the main criteria for line-source behavior.

The effective radiation length of 18″ / 46cm. offers an extreme power handling of 210W RMS and 3kW peak (for 200ms, which is ten times the industry standard) and a very high efficiency of 108dB with 1Watt @ 1m. With a 90-degree wave-guide, this efficiency even rises to 110dB, with a frequency operating range of 1kHz. – 20kHz.(+/-3dB) and a maximum SPL of 145dB.

Pro Ribbon Technology - Alcons AudioThe RBN601 has a true power handling of 70W/1000W, enabled by the proprietary designed heat-management (patent pending) and an unsurpassed efficiency of 103dB (log average 2-10kHz 1W/1m), making it the most powerful ribbon driver unit in its category. With its “Alcons green” color scheme, the driver has therefore been nicknamed “the Hulk” 😉

The RBN401 is a scaled-down version of the RBN601. With a power handling of 50W/800W and an efficiency of 100dB (log average 2-10 kHz.) it’s “the Hulk”s smaller brother, therefore named “baby Hulk”.

Philip de Haan: “During the market research we found that not only the technology but also accuracy of the production process is critical with this type of technology. True craftsmanship and experience are essential for production stability with this type of transducer technology.”

Ribbon tweeters have traditionally been characterized as fragile, with low power handling, low efficiency and low impedance. With the low weight moving mass, the ribbon offers considerable advantages in response especially at frequencies of above 8kHz. In this “fidelity-area” of the sound spectrum, the ribbon doesn’t suffer from “cone break-up” and the distortion resulting from that. The RBN pro-ribbon drivers are truly a leap forward in ribbon transducers specifically and high SPL sound reproduction in general.

The SR9 is a passive 2-way ultra-compact loudspeaker, specifically designed for applications where ultimate fidelity response needs to be projected with wide horizontal and precise vertical coverage.
Typical (short to medium throw) applications for the SR9 range from low-profile stage-lip/front-fill (on-stage or in show deck) to upper-/underbalcony up to “stealth-mounted” system in stair risers or walls. 

As “signature” of all Alcons designs, the SR9 combines remarkable clarity and intelligibility with high SPL. Loaded with the RBN401 pro-ribbon driver, with its patented wide, horizontally controlled dispersion, the system features 120° dispersion with a super fast transient response for unsurpassed intelligibility and a “digitally” dynamic response. The narrow vertical coverage offers maximum “gainbefore- feedback” directly above (on stage) or under (orchestra pit) the speaker. The double 5” woofers are non-vented, for a smooth low-end roll-off; This sealed box tuning enables easily adjustable lowfrequency response.

The low height and shallow depth, combined with the specially recessed connector plate make the SR9 fit inconspicuously in virtually any space.

The system includes dedicated filtering, but system equalizing is done remotely (electronically) fully utilizing the individual speaker components’ output capacity. This results in increased headroom SPL above 800Hz. of 10dB.

The SignalIntegritySensing™ pre-wiring ensures complete cable/connector compensation between the SR9 and ALC.

General

The ALC2 is a combination of a speaker controller and power amplifier. The ALC units are designed to guarantee the best speaker drive, with maximum sound quality and operating reliability.
The amplifier stage consists of a 2 x 1kW (RMS 2 ohms) Class G design, combined with a conventional power supply with large 210 Joule capacitor bank for dynamic and sustained high power output.

The controller section consist of several stages. On the input stage the SDP circuit and on the output stage the SIS circuit ensure easy, reliable and optimised speaker response.

SDP Speaker Drive ProcessorTM

The SDP circuit can be seen as the “brain” of the amplifier. By means of speaker-specific modules, that are located in 2 front-accessible slots, the characteristics of the connected speaker are loaded into the amplifier. With this, the amplifier is “tailor-made” to the speaker, regardless of the power output specifications of the amplifier. This can be done with either the analogue SDP modules, or the DDP digital drive processor™.
Multiple processing functions are operating at the same time:

  • Protection: The speaker is protected against damage from over-excursion and power overload.
  • Dedicated filtering: The fixed cross-over settings cater for the best system performance.
  • Optimised power response: The SDP module adjusts the RMS and peak values to the speakers capacity, giving maximum system power output.
  • System equalising: This circuit equalises the system response, with utilising the maximum component efficiency. This results in higher overall system sensitivity and reduces the need for active filtering while offering efficient amplifier usage (passive system).

The DDP™ also offers level control, mute and a user-controllable 4-band parametric equaliser and (up to) 340ms delay.

By placing the modules in the slots, the SDP circuit is automatically activated, without the need for changing switches/jumpers (“plug&play”). Taking out the modules, bypasses the SDP circuit and converts the ALC into a “standard” stereo power ampli- fier, for use with traditional speaker systems.

SIS Signal Integrity SensingTM

The SIS circuit extends the control-loop of the amplifier to the input terminals of the speaker, by means of two additional (sense) wires, compensating for the influence of speaker cables.
SIS offers cable-length independent damping, resulting in a virtually infinite damping under all conditions (up to an almost immeasurable value of over 10.000).

Furthermore SIS maintains signal level by detecting the amount of signal loss at the end of the cable. As a result of pre-compensation of the self-induction of the cable, non-linear harmonic + intermodulation distortion are reduced substantially by SIS, while offering a more linear frequency response (reduced linear distortion).

SIS offers a significantly tighter and more accurate low and mid response. Without connection of the 2 extra sense wires, the ALC units can also be used as any normal amplifier in combination with non- SIS speaker systems.

ATCM Advanced Thermal and Clip ManagementTM

ATCM has a number of sensors within the ampli- fier, that constantly monitor both operating temperature, in and output signal. For the temperature section of ATCM, the input signal stage is regulated when dangerous temperature increase is sensed; In this way, the amplifier stays in operation, instead of switching into “heat protection”.

The clip limiter section reduces the signal input level to the safest maximum level, when continuous clipping is detected. In this way the high frequency drivers are protected against damage from harmonics and also the amplifier remains cooler. The limiter has a “Soft-knee clipping characteristic” for inaudible, but safe operation.

ATCM offers ease-of-operation and guarantees operation under all conditions.

Data Port

The Data port located on the back of the unit, is the connection for ALC remote-control function.

Through the 15-pin D-connection to remote processor, function includes indication of operating status; Temperature per channel, bridge/parallel mode, AC power level, output power read-out, impedance check for speaker damage, clip/protect indication, level control, etc.

For cinema application, the Data-port is completely compatible with existing D-pin connected cinema monitors. In that application, the signal in/out connection also caters for reduced set-up and installation time and standardised in/output levels.

Operation

The ALC 2 amplifier has in addition a number of user-friendly features, that make the ALC the ideal Alcons speaker companion.

All relevant switches (bridge and parallel input) are conveniently located on the front behind the cover. When switching to bridge-mode, there is no need for using different SDP modules. Furthermore, in bridge-mode, the amp is controlled by only one channel.

The parallel-mode input switch: With this switch, the input of channel 1 is also send to input channel 2. Therefore there is no need for external “loop wires” from link output 1 into input 2.

The ALC features PowerCon™ AC power connection, for quick and efficient exchange of rack mounted ALC’s.

The ALC2-ST is the “stealth” version of the ALC2. It has potentiometers that are located behind the front lid, preventing unwanted changing of gainsettings.

The parallel-mode input switch: With this switch, the input of channel 1 is also send to input channel 2. Therefore there is no need for external “loop wires” (Y-cables) from link output 1 into input 2.

The ALC features PowerCon™ AC power connection, for quick and efficient exchange of rack mounted ALC’s.

The ALC4-ST is the “stealth” version of the ALC4. It has potentiometers that are located behind the front lid, preventing unwanted changing of gainsettings.

General

The ALC6 is a combination of a speaker controller and power amplifier. The ALC units are designed to guarantee the best speaker drive, with maximum sound quality and operating reliability.

The controller section consist of several stages; On the input stage the SDP circuit and on the output stage the SIS circuit ensure easy, reliable and optimised speaker response.

SDP Speaker Drive ProcessorTM

The SDP circuit can be seen as the “brain” of the amplifier. By means of speaker-specific modules, that are located in 2 front-accessible slots, the characteristics of the connected speaker are loaded into the amplifier. With this, the amplifier is “tailor-made” to the speaker, regardless of the power output specifications of the amplifier. This can be done with either the analogue SDP modules, or the DDP digital drive processor™.
Multiple processing functions are operating at the same time:

  • Protection: The speaker is protected against damage from over-excursion and power overload.
  • Dedicated filtering: The fixed cross-over settings cater for the best system performance.
  • Optimised power response: The SDP module adjusts the RMS and peak values to the speakers capacity, giving maximum system power output.
  • System equalising: This circuit equalises the system response, with utilising the maximum component efficiency. This results in higher overall system sensitivity and reduces the need for active filtering while offering efficient amplifier usage (passive system).

The DDP™ also offers level control, mute and a user-controllable 4-band parametric equaliser and (up to) 340ms delay.

By placing the modules in the slots, the SDP circuit is automatically activated, without the need for changing switches/jumpers (“plug&play”). Taking out the modules, bypasses the SDP circuit and converts the ALC into a “standard” stereo power ampli- fier, for use with traditional speaker systems.

SIS Signal Integrity SensingTM

The SIS circuit extends the control-loop of the amplifier to the input terminals of the speaker, by means of two additional (sense) wires, compensating for the influence of speaker cables.
SIS offers cable-length independent damping, resulting in a virtually infinite damping under all conditions (up to an almost immeasurable value of over 10.000).

Furthermore SIS maintains signal level by detecting the amount of signal loss at the end of the cable. As a result of pre-compensation of the self-induction of the cable, non-linear harmonic + intermodulation distortion are reduced substantially by SIS, while offering a more linear frequency response (reduced linear distortion).

SIS offers a significantly tighter and more accurate low and mid response. Without connection of the 2 extra sense wires, the ALC units can also be used as any normal amplifier in combination with non- SIS speaker systems.

ATCM Advanced Thermal and Clip ManagementTM

ATCM has a number of sensors within the ampli- fier, that constantly monitor both operating temperature, in and output signal. For the temperature section of ATCM, the input signal stage is regulated when dangerous temperature increase is sensed; In this way, the amplifier stays in operation, instead of switching into “heat protection”.

The clip limiter section reduces the signal input level to the safest maximum level, when continuous clipping is detected. In this way the high frequency drivers are protected against damage from harmonics and also the amplifier remains cooler. The limiter has a “Soft-knee clipping characteristic” for inaudible, but safe operation.

ATCM offers ease-of-operation and guarantees operation under all conditions.

Data Port

The Data port located on the back of the unit, is the connection for ALC remote-control function.

Through the 15-pin D-connection to remote processor, function includes indication of operating status; Temperature per channel, bridge/parallel mode, AC power level, output power read-out, impedance check for speaker damage, clip/protect indication, level control, etc.

For cinema application, the Data-port is completely compatible with existing D-pin connected cinema monitors. In that application, the signal in/out connection also caters for reduced set-up and installation time and standardised in/output levels.

The ALC6 amplifier has in addition a number of user-friendly features, that make the ALC the ideal Alcons speaker companion.
